The celebration will take no end in my house, since my newfound love for poppunk has begun to blossom. I will sort of pick up where I left off in the last post on this topic, in that I will present you with the brilliant record We are still alive by Latterman. For a detailed description of the bands sound, read the stuff I wrote about Iron chic. Its some of the same people, and its got the same Long Island sound, and also the same amount of sheer genius.

I simply cant praise this record enough, and its been getting ridiculous amounts of airtime lately. There is not much to say except, get it. Now. And dont be a lowlife with no sense of aesthetics and just sit there wanking to your mp3's. Get off your ass and buy the physical record, and support this amazing band already.

Secondly; have you ever (and I know you all have) wondered what it would sound like, if your favorite sludgeband like, say Thou or EyeHateGod played poppunk? As I stated, I am perfectly aware that several hundreds of you have lost many a good nights sleep, contemplating this question. Rest easy, the answer is finally here, and it is: Unfun.

This unique Vancouver band has all the musical makings of a good poppunk band, but they play it like theyre playing dirty, gritty sludge. This means downtuned guitars and raspy, almost pissed off whiskeyvocals. Easily the most innovative band I have come across in the genre.

Lastly, totally off topic, I bring you the superb Nude Beach, by way of IfYouMakeIt.com. This site has their debut full lenght for free and legal download. If you have a softspot for great garagerock, that smells like summer, lukewarm beers and organic pot-joints, this is place. This record is so good its almost stupid! On forgotten 7''es

You all know them. Those 7''es that someone once gave you, that you liked, but never really really liked, and as such filed in the end of your collection where you dont come that often. Well Grouper's 7'' He knows, he knows, he knows was one of those for me. A friend, who knows Liz Harris (aka Grouper) personally once gave me this record, and though I liked it, it never really caught me. Thus it just sat there for a good while, untill someday, I dug it out, for whatever reason, and became interested to see what else there were in her discography, apart from the three songs on the 7''. What I found blew me away.

Grouper made quite a few records, so what I'll share with you here, is simply the one that is most to my liking. It should be said however, that everything I've heard by her so far, is pretty good.

The record in question is called Dragging a dead dear up a hill, and was made in 2008. Musically Grouper deals in variations of drone. But not bassheavy, hour-long drones, meant exclusively to destroy you speakers with subsonic terror. Instead we are dealing with beautiful, dreamy and sometimes almost delicate and fragile songs, with Liz Harris vocals and her guitar lapping against each other, like waves upon the beach. The music gives me an impression of lying just below the surface of a body of water, and beholding the world sliding by me, in slow motion. I cant recommend this record highly enough.

As always, if you like it, go and find it somewhere, and buy it. Good artists are worth supporting.

A few words on poppunk

Poppunk was THE genre that eventually lead me to hardcore punk, grindcore, powerviolence, slugde, doom, death metal, black metal and all those other genres that I now love. One might also say that "In the beginning, there was Satanic Surfers".

My gripe with this genre is, that since I first got into it, in the mid-nineties, it hasnt really done a lot for me. That is to say, that a lot of the "new" bands popping up, never really reached the level of my old heroes, that got me into punk in the first place. The bands Im talking about here are Satanic Surfers (first and foremost!), Propagandhi, Millencolin, NOFX, No use for a name, Bad Religion and so on.

Almost none of the bands that followed these could quite measure up, in my opinion, and thus I started to focus more on other genres, that were still able to produce new acts that could catch and hold my attention. However, a few years back, good friends set me on to a handfull of bands that could easily match my teenage heroes. It is bands from this bunch, bands that hold that particular sound and drive that I'll present in this post.

Initially I'll present the first band that really reached me in the same way that the early Satanic Surfers did, namely Iron chic. I first caught wind of their self titled demo from 2008 when it was repressed not to long ago. Five songs that instantly floored me, had me craving more, and had me waiting like an anxious teenagegirl for Justin Biebers... uhm... next single.

Iron Chic features members of the now defunct (and amazing) Latterman, and just like Latterman we are dealing in full on anthemic, sing-along poppunk, with a strong (read STRONG) sense for writing good songs.

Well, the follow up did in fact come out last year, and instantly made my top ten records of 2010 list. Not Like This, picks up the thread from the demo, and perfects the sound even more. A brilliant record packed, back-to-back with "hits". Not one song lagging in quality. Not one song seeming like its just there as filling. A masterpiece, pure and simple.

Fast forward to about a week ago. The same good friend that put me on to Iron Chic, points me in the direction of the band Boilerman. A fairly new act, they only have a five song demotape out, and just now, a four song 7''. In a genre that is packed with excess, both in musical terms and in terms of how many crappy bands there are, Boilerman is the antithesis of all this. On the 7'' Bright young things, three of the songs only just ticks past the one minute mark. This is no-bullshit-poppunk, with a great energy and just enough attitude to keep things interesting.

Included in this package is both the demotape and the 7''.

Go on. You know you want to. And when youre done with this, go listen to The Dopamines, Wax Phantom, Latterman and The Dents.

Eerieness in swedish

Not much to say this time around.

The topic of the day, is the brilliant swedish band Ättestupa, and a nifty little package containing the following amazing releases:

Untitled - 2008
1867 - 2009
Begraven mot norr - 2010
Mitt blod, min kropp - 2010

The music is extremely hard to pin down, but the elements that comprise Ättestupa draws upon genres as diverse as; noise, black metal, krautrock, funeralfolk, drone and power electronics.

In fact the meaning of the name of the band offers a better insight into whats going on. Apparently, in midieval Scandinavia, when people got to old to make a valuable contribution in the fields, or to the general upkeep of the household, they would venture to the top of a steep cliff (called a Ättestupa) and jump off, thus sparring the rest of the household the burden of having to provide for them, now that they were no longer able to pull their own weight. (That is the longest sentence on the internet).

Either way, heres a few closing facts:

- Begraven mot norr is one of 2010's best releases!

- In the year 1867 the winter in sweden lasted until late june, causing the harvest to fail massively, and leading directly to death, starvation and mass emigration from Sweden.

- Mitt blod, min kropp is Ättestupa's side of a split they did with the swedish power electronics act Alfarmania.

- Dont, DONT listen to this music, if you are depressed, or on some sort of mind altering drugs. There may be no coming back to reality.

American black metal part V: The Dopesmoker(s) of ambient black metal

Its time, once again, to examine the rich undergrowth of the black metal scene, stemming from the US. As the title hints at, what I have dug out of the cave this time, is ambient black metals equivalent of Sleep's legendary Dopesmoker album. In fact, there's two of them, namely the two albums Rain and The hunt, by Cascadia's Fauna.

As the attentive reader will undoubtly know, Cascadia is an area that also gave much inspiration to the mighty Wolves in the throne room, wich can be found elsewhere in this blog. Having stated as much, I think its safe to say that fans of the aforementioned band will also find something interresting in Fauna.

Like Wolves in the throne room, Fauna can also be described as eco-centric in that they deal with the sorrow and desloation, the pristine beauty and kill or be killed ethics of nature.

Both records have only one track on them, but the tracks tick in at (and this is where the Dopesmoker comparrison comes up) 1 hour, 3 minuttes and 18 seconds (Rain), and 1 hour, 19 minuttes and 57 seconds (The hunt). Thus, it should be clear that this is not the kind of record that you just put on and listen superficially to. Rain for example, kicks off with a six minutte field recording of rain falling in the forest. After this, it changes into an acoustic part, with eerily sung clean vocals, and after about 22 minuttes launches itself into pure black metal mayhem.

The hunt is equally mastodontic in its size, but unlike Rain, it is divided into seven sections (the record is still one track though). The sections, titles, and sectionlenghts are as follows:

Japan vs. Australia

Im back to offer unto you all two records that have gotten a lot of time on the stereo here lately.

First up is Japan's Razors Edge and their record Thrashing goes lovely. Believe me when I say that this record is cut from sheer awesomeness of the kind that is only made in Japan. I mean, who else thinks of mixing straight up, fast-as-fuck japaneese thrash with vocal harmonies that reminds you of poppunk and an all-round, very melodic feel? So, you ask, does it work? YES!!! Its fucking fantastic!

The next record is quite a different treat, but a treat none the less. Those of you familiar with the brilliant Australian death metal band Portal, will be glad to know that Impetuous Ritual is made up of two members of this groundbreaking band. As such, the style is very similar to Portal. Thus, what we are dealing with is fuzzy, distorted, demons-from-beyond-is-coming-to-devour-all-humanity-in-a-very-painful-and-transdimensional-way kind of sounding deathmetal. The record is called Relentless execution of ceremonial excrescence, and its every bit as brainmelting as the name implies.

This will be a short one, simply because it falls into the category of "more funny than actually good". The light this time shines upon a group of swedes playing easy listening pop covers of classic metal and rocks biggest hits.

The band is called Hellsongs, and on this record, you will find the following songs:

Paranoid (Black Sabbath)
Breaking the law (Judas Priest)
Run to the hills (Iron Maiden)
Jump (Van Halen)
Orgasmatron (Motörhead)

Hardcore metalfans will propably call this blasphemy, and it propably is, but I ask you this; are you really a metalhead if you fear a little blasphemy?!

Be prepared to strain your ears to hear the resemblance (apart from the lyrics) with the original songs. As I said, this falls into the "more funny than actually good" category. It may not even be funny, but at least it is obscure, thus fitting the criteria of this series.

Its time to answer the question that we have all asked ourselves at some point in our lives; if animals could play music, what would the play? Fear not, the answer has been bestowed upon us by group of germans, collectively known as Attack Of The Mad Axeman.

The narrative of this band is as follows; the mad axeman has destroyed the forest, leaving the animals with no other option in way of retaliation but to play frantic, agressive grindcore (obviously!!). Thus, the band consists of the following members:

Procyon Loctor (guitar and vocals)
Helix Pomatia (drums)
Emys Orbicularis (vocals)
Apis Melifera (bass)

Those proficient in latin and biological terms will know that this means that the drums are being played by a snail...

Seriously, there is not much more to say than what can be seen in the following live video:

I leave you with their record Grind the enimal (yes, its spelled with an "e" for some reason...). A final funfact is the respective thank you and fuck you lists.

The thank you list includes the following:

My all-time favorite records part I

...and now for something completely different. I have long had the idea of creating a series of posts, celebrating those very special records, that you just know, from the first listen, are something other than just another "good record". Those records, where not one song seems out of place, or lacks quality, and that you continually return to, no matter how much other music you stumble upon and fall in love with. Those records that you just flip over and start over again, as soon as it has run out.

Having thus established the criteria for the selection, its time to present my first entry, and an artist that I can not praise enough, neither musically, nor as a person, namely Jason Anderson and his masterpiece of a record called "The hopeful and the unafraid".

Having seen Jason play live two times, I can say without faltering, that his performances is the most punk thing I ever saw, in that he manages to do what so many punk and hardcorebands strive for. He breaks the barrier between the spectacle and the audience, uniting the two parts into a singing, dancing, flailing crowd of people, singing along to songs they are just hearing for the first time in their lives.

He is one hell of a storyteller, wich is shown clearly on many of the songs on the record, especially the magnificent opening track "El Paso". Musically we are dealing with folk with a distinct diy quality to the songwriting and the performance.

I could use multiple pages praising Jason and this record in particular, but let me leave you with this:

- The first time I heard "El Paso", my eyes teared up, spontaniously.
- Jason's performances mirrors his incredible personality. I can honestly say, that I never met anyone as sympathetic, genuine and thoroughly nice as him.
- If you EVER get the chance to see Jason play live, TAKE IT! And say hi from me, if im not there with you.

In conclusion, I'd like to share a live performance of one of his best songs ever "So long". To some, the message in this song will propably come across as cheesy, but think about it, and tell me that he's wrong. And watch as he gets the whole crowd to sing along. I fucking love this guy!!!

Its time once again to get downright obscure. This time, the light shines upon a japanese band called Birushanah and their record 赤い闇. Theres not really a lot to say about this, but here's the deal.

We are dealing in sludge/doom with a former members of noted japanese bands such as YOB and Corrupted. The twist (and you all know by now that theres always a twist in these posts), is that they incorporate traditional japanese music into the mix. This makes for a very strange, and unquestionably unique sound.

Thats the words, now eat your mushrooms and go listen to it.

Have you ever seen a procession of Hare Krishna's in your neighbourhood? You know, those happy-happy-go-lucky dudes, dancing around in their orange robes, singing and smiling so hard it looks like their heads are about to split in half? Yeah?! Well, these guys couldnt be farther from that stereotype.

Sure, you might be vegetarian or vegan. You might be sxe. You might be really good to animals. You might even be good to your fellow humans and go out of your way to be an allround nice person.....youre still not good enough for these guys.

In the 1990's, hardcore (mainly in the US) experienced a huge influx of people with various spiritual ideas, who infused these into the music. This gave birth among others to bands and labels like the christian Strongarm and Solid State Records. Of course, the Krishnas also had to have a go.

108 was formed in 1991 by Vic DiCara, also known as Vraja Kishor Das, a devotee of Krishna. The band took its name after the number of prayerbeads on the Japa Mala. After the band split, Vraja Kishor Das moved to India to become a monk.

Musically, you ask? Pissed off (read: PISSED OFF!!!), simple hardcore very much in the vein of the early 90'ies sound.Oh yeah, and theres some Krishna-chanting somewhere in the mix sometimes. Next time you see your local Krishnas dancing down the street, imagine them breaking out instruments and playing their asses off with 108 covers!

The birth of the thunder-pop!

Im posting this to celebrate what I think is a truly genious recording. A true masterpiece, in my humble opinion.

I bring you Floor - s/t. For those of you that is unfamiliar with this band, it is worth mentioning that it features key members that would go on to form the mighty Torche, wich would progress with, and evolve the sound put forth by Floor.

Musically we are dealing with heavy-as-fuck (were talking we're-tuning-our-instruments-so-low-that-the-strings-almost-fall-off-heavy-as-fuck) stoney rock, with a sound so unique that its not enough to charachterize it only as stoner, nor fitting enough to classify it as doom or sludge. Hence, many has dubbed Floor and Torche as thunder-pop, stoner-pop and such.

This record is overflowing with musical goodies and several thunderous riffs, that makes you feel
like you're in the middle of an avalanche. A-ma-zing!

Token of Death

After too much time on pause, this should mark my return to this blog as active again. Marco has kept the engine running, but he is to be alone no more!

An epic line-up tonight at Dödsmaskinen/Dortheavej 61 (Love Potion, Night Fever, Moonless, and acccording to rumors, an ASBEST reunion show) made me want to post another great k-town hardcore group.

Death token play fast, no bullshit, japanese-inspired hardcore, with nods to thrashcore, and even sludge/black metal sometimes.

I just finished a succesful quest to the land of milk, honey, and delicious vinyl; namely Copenhagens best recordstore RepoMan Records. And as always when returning from a great record-heist, I must share my findings with you all, so without further mumbo-jumbo, here's the loot:

Cult Ritual - s/t 12'' and Cult Ritual - 2ndEP 7'':
Its only a few days ago that I was made aware of the existence of this amazing band. Cult Ritual plays uncompromising, straight-for-the-throat, gritty-as-fuck hardcore punk. It comes across as one of the few bands that can convey the feeling of "everything is going to shit, so lets do crystal-meth through our asses and play like theres no yesterday"! The 12'' finished up with a 12:10 minutes long, spaced out acidious track entitled "Cancer money". Very rough, very original, very very good, and very much released by Youth Attack!

Gasp - Drome trile of puzzle zoo people 12'':
Apparently cited to have been a huge influence for a petit band called The endless blockade, Gasp and the toungetwisting record "Drome trile of puzzle zoo people", was among the first bands to use ambient and noisy elements in their metallic sounding powerviolence. Also using tape-loops and such, puts them right up there, not far from Man is the bastard. That in it self should be enough to tickle the curiousity of most of this blogs readers. Oh, and its released on Slap A Ham.

Man is the bastard - Abundance of guns 7'':
Im not even gonna bother to introduce this band. If you dont know them, youre missing out on one of the most essential bands of powerviolence. Keywords include; homemade speakers, noise, brutality, supreme originality and homemade speakers. I mostly included this release to brag about owning it, so I guess Im just a consumerist whore. I loose...

Oh yeah, and I also picked up an Insect Warfare - Information Economy bootleg 7''.

As a true and passionate music nerd, of course I dig almost anything, as long as it is obscure enough. A good example is the Vienna Vegetable Orchestra, performing "electronica" that is perhaps better characterized as "organica" as all the intruments are made of vegetables.

Another very good example is The County Medical Examiners and their album Olidous operettas. Here is the breakdown on this outfit: musically we are dealing with straight up, all out Carcass-worship from beginning to goresoaked end. The twist is in the fact that the members of this band actually are county medical examiners by profession and education. As such, the members are listed with their professional titles; Dr. Morton Fairbanks MD, Dr. Jack Putnam MD, and Dr. Guy Radcliffe, MD., Ph.D. The obscurity continues upon noting that Dr. Guy Radcliffe, is more than 60 years of age and isnt even remotely into grind, goregrind or deathmetal, but just joined the project for fun. As such, the band has never played any live shows.

Being all doctors and loving Carcass (at least Dr. Morton Fairbanks and Dr. Jack Putnam) obviusly, all the songs are lengthy, chants ornated with latin terms about autopsy and the medical treatment of corpses.

To underline the point about the obscurity, the link will not, as usual be a picture of the cover of the record (anyone into Carcass will hardly be surprised if I say that is a collage of real more or less cut up corpses), but a picture of the band, with Dr. Guy Radcliffe in the middle.

I hereby challenge anyone to dig up a band as obscure as this!

Tunes to haunt the desolate post-nuclear urban wasteland

Just a quick post this time to celebrate a band that I litteraly came across just minutes ago, namely Altar of plagues from Ireland. On this phenomenal record entitled "White tomb" we are dealing with blackmetal of the sort that bands like Weakling and the mighty Wolves in the throne room have perfected.

4 epic, haunting tunes, ticking in at just over 50 minutes. But where for example Wolves in the throne room induced images of standing atop a mountain, overlooking vast forrests, waterfalls and centuries aged trees, Altar of plagues have the feel of wandering the streets of a vast metropolis after the nuclear holocaust. A metropolis, now left a barren, scarred necropolis. This people, is amazing!

From just the initial listen, this record has already made my top 10 of 2009! The top 10 of 2009 will be posted sometime in december.

Now get around to listening to this amazing band that will be in Copenhagen in april, after their show on Roadburn 2010.

F****** crazy japanese!!!

I offer unto ye, oh mightiest grey homogenous blob, of internet users, an (un)healthy dose of crazy japanese grind/thrash/powerviolence/fastcore.

First up, yet another great comp in the Barbaric Thrash series from 625 Thrashcore, namely Japan Thrash Revolution. As the title indicates, we are dealing with all asian bands dealing in the aforementioned genres. Bands on this comp include: World Downfall, Mind Of Asian, Low Vision, Cheap Skate, Conga Fury, Circle X, and Brutal Terrorism among many others.

Secondly, I bring you the amazing, crazy-ass Tokyo skate-thrashers Breakfast, and their Classic Six Packs, compiling their first demotape, the Eat Rice EP and the Second EP. Like always, what we have on our hands is quircky, full-on skate-thrash with the usual japanese feel. Amazing!

Weak minds, scrotums and Max fuckin Ward...

In order to celebrate that the Weak Minds - s/t 7'' is gonna be coming in my door soon, I figured that I'd post it here. Weak Minds rip off your ballsack with 16 shredding tunes of good old powerviolence, done the Gulf Coast way, that all you kids love. Its fucking amazing. There, I said it. And if this doesnt do anything for you, heres some bonus info to boot: Rahi of the new age indie-pop band Insect Warfare does guest vocals...

Also, I bring you the Max Ward/The Scrotums split. Yes yes, MW is indeed named after the one and only godfather of fast'n'blast. I guess that the name is a bit over the top, but I can very much dig the 625 worship going on in their songs and lyrics. The other side of the split is The Scrotums who, despite lacking a decent name brings to the chopping block, fast-as-fuck posi-powerviolence/fastcore. Both bands do a decent job, but have details about them that makes them deserve the attention of this blog.

Lastly, one of the absolutely best bands in the whole fuckin genre: IN DISGUST! Here is a video of a split set they did with moderately good Godstomper for a radiostation. INfuckingDISGUST is all I have to say about that!

So, this is a post to celebrate the sheer awesomeness of the band of crazy individuals known collectively as Graf Orlock. Named after the vampire in the alltime classic vampiremovie Nosferatu, the band brings to the stage, full-on, teeth to the curb, grinding hardcore, lathed to the brink with a shitload (read: A SHITLOAD) of movie-quotes.

A good example is the song "Days of high adventure" from the newest of their records, Destination time today. The song kicks off with a quote that goes like this:

"What is best in life?"
"To crush your enemies, have them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women!"

Let me say it like it is, there is certain bands that you should keep your hands off, in terms of playing covers. Your crappy deathmetal band should stay away from doing Carcass, Slayer or At The Gates covers. Unless you are indeed one of the aforementioned bands. As such, At The Gates covering Slayer makes more sense...

The same logic applies for blackmetal bands covering Darkthrone and so forth...

This said, some bands are able to lift the burden of covering extremely influential bands in their own "genre". This, my friends, is one of them. I bring you four Black Sabbath covers by the one and only Thou, as presented on their "Through empires of the eternal void" 12''.

Allright. Just decided to post this, cause I talked to Requiem about it yesterday. Apparently not to many people know of this record, wich is really a shame since it is a classic among bands from Copenhagen.

We are dealing with All I see - "Once you've fallen in love". I'll keep it short. We are talking high energy screamo (ish stuff), with amazing political and outspokenly anarchist lyrics. Members went on to play in: Children of fall, Music Mafia and Obstacles.

ASSUCK INTERVIEW - PAUL PAVLOVICH

After taking a long and irrational pause from Perpetual Vomit im back and ready to write and share music with fellow noise geeks worldwide!
Because of my long time of absence on this blog i present as an humble excuse my Assuck interview i made about a few months ago.
The interview are meant to be a headliner of a zine im hoping to make with help from the two other writers from this blog but that project might take a while and i want to share the interview so here it is:

Among the many grindbands of past and present Assuck still have an most original and inventive sound. Anticapital (1992) and Misery Index (1997) stands as two mighty monuments in the confusing maze of grindcore. These two full lengths are filled with an classic death metal approach meets old school Napalm Death. Think Repulsion and Napalm Deaths lovechild.
Besides having that special sound i admire the most in grindcore (besides Discordance Axis and Gridlink) i was amazed when i first read the lyrics of Anticapital.
Behind the growling rage there´s words written of the finest quality. One could say that is dosent matter when you cant understand the words anyway but i disagree.
I think writing intellegent and insightful songs is an important factor that often tends to be forgotten.
This is certainly not the case of Assuck.
Paul Pavlovich sang for Assuck from the founding of the band in 1987 until 1994 when he quit the band and began to focus on visual art and design.
Anyways the interview:

The start of Assuck: How old were you at the time and how did it begin?

We all went to the same high school. Steve and I became friends because we had a common taste in music. There was a lot of tape trading between us and a small group of friends. We exchanged ideas about what type of band we wanted to be in. Our first attempt at music was a hardcore band in the vein of Septic Death. Steve didn’t play guitar at this point. He was writing lyrics and fronted the band as the singer. I was trying to play the bass and realized I wasn’t very good at it. Steve and I were eventually introduced to Rob who already had a reputation as a skilled drummer. Steve wanted to play guitar and I had no business playing a musical instrument. We discussed a project where Steve would play guitar and I would take over on vocals. Our main objective for the band to be as fast and as heavy as possible. All this activity was taking place before the term “Grindcore” was a part of any of our vocabulary. Everything was either ‘metal’ ‘trash’ or ‘punk’. Then we heard ‘Scum’ by Napalm Death and our ideas fell into place.

Hailing from Florida, did you guys come from background of music?

None of us were formally trained if that’s what you mean? I think Rob may have taken drum lessons before he started playing with Steve. When we first started practicing and writing songs there were immediate results. You could tell Rob had been playing for a while and he was comfortable behind a drum kit. Steve was entirely self taught as a guitar player. It seemed second nature to him. He got good very quickly. Even his song writing skills improved by leaps and bounds. I, on the other hand was always clumsy playing an instrument. My focus was writing lyrics, drawing, design work etc. I was lucky you didn’t need any particular vocal talent to be in a grindcore band. All you needed was a bit of anger and some motivation.

What were Assucks musical inspirations?

We were interested in a bunch of different music. Obviously the underground music that was coming out of Europe and the UK made a huge impression. I was listening to bands like Celtic Frost, Winter, Fear of God. Then I started getting into punk bands like Crass, Discharge and Rudimentary Peni. I also really liked the Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine. While Steve and Rob were into tech-metal like Watchtower and Cynic.

Any local bands inspired your music and did there exist a hardcore scene in Florida at the time??

There was a 5-6 year period where the Florida music scene was massive and very active. It was hard not to be influenced by it. There were great bands who we supported and got the opportunity to play with from all over the state. In Tampa there was a very tight-knit Hardcore and Death Metal scene that were getting a lot of attention. Everyone was recording at Morrissound Studios and the producer Scott Burns was so busy we wondered if he ever got any sleep. We were fortunate to be introduced us to a bunch of really good people. We found our closest allies and the people we related to all came from a much smaller punk and hardcore scene that existed at the same time the Death Metal scene was exploding. Then, for some reason, everybody toned down, left town, or just flat out stopped.

I know you played at Slap-A-Ham’s Fiesta Grande at Gilman 924, did Assuck have a connection to the power-violence phenomenon and the bands involved in this?

We were honored to play the first Fiesta Grande festival. We use to frequently correspond with Chris Dodge. He asked us to contribute a song to the first Bllleeeeaaauuurrrrgghhh! 7 inch comp. It was through that experience with Chris that we decided to plan our first west coast tour. All the bands that played that night were brilliant. It was an amazing experience and that show continues to be one of the more memorable Assuck shows for me personally. As for the ‘Power Violence’ phenomenon Assuck didn’t have any formal connections to it besides being huge supporters of bands like Crossed Out and No Comment. Back then the term ‘Power-Violence’ wasn’t frequently used to describe a genre of music. I remember Man Is The Bastard using it to describe there own music. These days ‘Power Violence’ is huge with a bunch of great bands at its core.

An aspect of Assuck that always have kept myself close to the band have been the lyrics.

I will dare to call them existential and poetic in many ways, what were your influences as the writer?

My first attempts at writing lyrics were crude and under-developed. It gradually got better over time and the more serious we became as a band the more serious I took the writing process. My main influence and the source of song ideas was simply the condition that politics imposes on the world, and how I saw myself and other people in that corrupt environment. The writers I care about most and never grow tired of are: Rosa Luxemburg, Leon Trotsky, Emma Goldman, George Orwell, and the anti-war poet Wilfred Owen.

I know the guitarist of Assuck took over the vocals at some point, when did you leave the band and why?

I parted ways with the band in 1994 the year I graduated college. The plans Steve and Rob had for Assuck no longer corresponded with my own personal objectives. I had shifted my attention to visual art around that time and I didn’t think my role in the band was working anymore. I felt like I accomplished everything I set out to accomplish with Assuck. We released records we were proud of. We toured and met a lot of great people. It was an incredibly creative time for all of us. In retrospect I think I picked a good time to split because everything I heard about the way the band broke apart in the end sounded like a nightmare. So Im glad I got out when I did.

Do you still have a connection with former band members?

With Steve and Rob...sadly, no. I am still close friends with Pete Jay who was Assuck’s first Bass Player.

And I get an e-mail every once in a while from Steve Kasiba who is a good friend and replaced Pete on bass.

Do you feel Assuck have a legacy of some kind?

‘Legacy’ sounds like such an over-blown word... I’ll put it to you like this: I never thought there would be a continued interest in the band 15 years after the fact. People still like the music and respond positively to what we did and that means a lot to me. All I wanted to do while I had my opportunity was to share ideas, express some thoughts about life and the politics of living in an unstable world. My intentions were humble. Anything said about the band beyond that is flattering.

You have been involved in other musical projects since Assuck among others the band Cattle Press from Hydra Head Records. Are you in bands at the present time?

I lived in New York for a short time and while I was living there my dear friend Javier Villegas who was playing bass for Cattle Press at the time asked me if I wanted to take over the vocals. I practiced with them several times and because of personal issues I had to return to Florida. So my involvement with Cattle Press was cut short. I am currently working with a group of friends on a gloomy and crushing project called EXITSECT. It’s heavily influenced by Amebix, Winter, Swans...etc. We have a few songs in the works and hope to have a full length record done by the end of the year. You studied and have been involved with art for quite some time. What kind of art have you been focused on?

Music, Art and Art History have been at the center of my life for a long time. I make a living as a graphic designer. I also work on illustration projects and get opportunities to show my personal work which consists of paintings and prints. I’m interested in contemporary work but lately I’ve been obsessed and research German Expressionism and sculpture from the 1920’s and the work of Kurt Schwitters. Also, the darker work Francisco Goya is what currently interests me.

What are your favorite authors?

Besides the authors I listed in your previous question. I really enjoy the work of Christopher Hitchens (especially his writing on religion), Karl Marx now more than ever, Janna Levin who wrote a great book called ‘A Madman Dreams of Turing Machines’ about The lives of Kurt Gödel and Alan Turing. The Serbian author Momo Kapor, Writings on the Paris Commune by Mikhail Bakunin, and Peter Kropotkin. I’ll be happy to go on...I think you get the idea.

Hello, its been some time since i posted anything, but a show last night with RAMMING SPEED and GRUK (both from the states) made me want to share their music with you.

GRUK was, until yesterday, completely unknown to me. They play fastcore with oldschool punky parts and a killer live attitude. Their singer has an insane voice and looks crazy as fuck when on stage (or floor, in this case). Apart from playing mighty music, they are really nice people. This is their album called "Waiting For the Rapture..."

RAMMING SPEED features members from BONES BRIGADE and BACKSTABBERS INC. (which for me is a guarantee) and play thrash/punk/grind complete with guitar solos and all. After hearing thede dudes, i think Municipal Waste should go home and learn to play faster. Their live appearance is wild and energetic with cool vibes and lotsa fun, and the dudes are very talkative and genuine. damn im sorry that i didn't have the money to buy the "Top of the dude chain" t-shirt. This is their new album called "Brainwrecked". Sorry to EL MILO for abusing his link, but im too lazy to upload it myself.Now enjoy this while opening beers with your eyebrows and jumping around the room.

I feel the need to share with you all my recent growing obsession with the completely fuckin' amazing american band In Disgust from San Jose, California.

Ranging from blistering powerviolence, to crushing sludgy parts, spiced up with the most bloodcurling vocals and a over all original take on the genre this band makes for a refreshing break from the sometimes kind of generic sound, otherwise produced by the bands in this genre. Notice especially the release called "Reality choke".

Mosh-mayhem DELUXE!!!

Let me say it like it is. Metallic moshy hardcore doesnt come any better than this. The now defunct band Takaru from San Francisco brought forward the most intense, brutal, honest, and political hardcore, laced with shitloads of metal-feel, that I ever heard. I had the distinct pleasure of catching them twice when they toured Europe. Awesome band, and really nice people.

If this shit doesnt put you in a mood to start a circlepit, nothing will. Here we go:

First up is their brilliant full lenght called "There can be only none".

Secondly is their last release ever, the self-titled 7''.

This shit could turn a home for the elderly into the sickest moshpit you ever saw!

Fun fact: this band features Seth from Funeral Diner on bass. Who ever said that emokids cant be brutal as fuck, eh?!

Warzone fuckin Womyn!

So, here is a small post to celebrate that yesterday, I FINALLY got hold of a record that I have wanted for a good while. It took me ten (!!) pages of search results from Google before finally finding a distro that still had it, were able to ship to Denmark, and had a decent enough understanding of english to actually understand my myriad of questions.

Anyways, here it is Warzone Womyn/The endless blockade split. My main reason for wanting this masterpiece was the WW side. The endless blockade crack out two tracks, one looooong (almost 18 min.) noise track called "Island" and the traditional "The endless blockade" track. Good stuff. WW however bring to the table some of the most effecient, punishing powerviolence I have ever stumbled upon! 12 tracks that sounds like front teeth cracking against the curb. A-MA-ZING!!!

I also felt that I should include the Warzone Womyn demotape that I found online. If anyone is able to track down a copy of this, I will pay insane sums for it (like my soul.......or something...).

As far as I understand, this, and the tracks they have on the "Trapped in a scene" comp is the only stuff this amazing band released. "Trapped in a scene" can be found elsewhere in this blog. Go get it, it holds many amazing bands!

Rorschach were a New Jersey-based band that existed from 1989 to 1993. They are one of the first bands of the first powerviolence wave. Their sound is somewhat like Man Is The Bastard, except i personally find this band more aggresive. If this doesn't bring anything to your mind, then hurry up and download this. It's their discography by the way.

The next one up is destructive grinding powerviolence with lightning fast riffs and howled vocals all played at breakneck speed aswell as deadly slow. This is the second album California Love, i think. They have two members of Look Back And Laugh. Lyrics are misantropic as fuck. This one is for the nihilists!

Next disc. Bla bla. Pre-INFEST. bla bla bla. Pre-MAN IS THE BASTARD. Go get it!

Death metal. HP Lovecraft and Australia

Im back, this time to bring you two records of Australia's finest death metal band; Portal. In my humble opinion this is one of the most original and unique death metal acts that I have ever heard. Portal's music create surreal worlds that holds a quality not unlike that found in such films as Fritz Lang’s M, Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, Murnau’s Nosferatu, and Salvador Dali’s Un Chien Andalou. Picture a twisted, subterranean, and warped sound of one of Lovecraft's deities with the catacombic power of the earth itself, and the unforgiving rawness of a reality unbound by the laws of this world, and this is just a glimpse of where Portal dwell on a musical level. These guys score easy points in my book by having lyrics that are strongly influenced by the writings of Lovecraft. a clear example of this can be found in th song "Sunken" from the Seepia record:

Its time to look towards Spain for two amazing sludge bands, namely Hongo and Moho. Both dabble in dirty as fuck sludge that is equally agressive, ambient, beautiful and downright fuckin filthy. Two amazing records from two bands that should be held at high esteem by anyone priding themselves with liking sludge/stoner/doom and the likes. I think they share members in some way too, though I could be wrong. Also, the singer from Hongo delivers his vocals in a way that is similar to the classic powerviolence band Infest.

American black metal part IV: Beyond Twilight

This time 'round I'll bring you a post with a few of the highlights, spawned in the aftermath of the american black metal super-group Twilight. I have chosen to focus on three distinct releases. It is notable though, that each of these bands deserve a closer look, and that it is recommendable to look into their other releases, if your interrest is sparked by this.

First up is Lurker of chalice - s/t. This is one of the soloprojects of Wrest who also does Leviathan. A record that reeks of damp crypts, musty graveyards and darkened night skies. On this release, it will become apparent to the attentive listener that Wrest has taken a distinct part of the Twilight sound with him into this project. It ranges from full-on black metal, to droning, creeping doomy songs. This is the only official release by Lurker of chalice, apart from two demos. An eerie masterpiece, hands down.Secondly, another distinct soloproject formed from the ashes of Twilight, namely the one and only Xasthur and the record "Subliminal genocide". Xasthur is the brainchild of Twilight's Malefic, who has also done guest apperances on stage with bands such as Nachtmystium and Sunn O))). Xasthurs lyrics deal mostly with three themes, suicide, depression, and astral projection. Just like the easily recognizable, distorted vocals, the music itself is tormented and full of suffering. Like Lurker of chalice, the distinct Twilight sound is present here as well. Not a record to be listened to if you are in a depressed mood! If you have the mental stamina though, listen to it at night, in pitch black darkness, on a pair of headphones. Its a trip into unknown depths of the human psyche...
Lastly we have Nachtmystium - Instinct: decay. Nachtmystium is not, like Lurker of chalice and Xasthur, an soloproject, but rather a full band, featuring Azentrius, also formerly of Twilight. Nachtmystium stands out from the other two records in this post, not only in that it is a full bands, but also in that the musical focus is not what has otherwisely been coined as "depressive black metal". Nachtmystium though, has been described many a time as "psychedelic black metal". Listening to this record, it becomes apparent, why it has been dubbed as such. It has a very distinct sound, not heard often in black metal circles. One that is hard to put into exact words, so give it a listen, and you might catch my drift.

Play fast or DIE!!!

Just prepared a bunch of speedy gems for you here, so lets get right to it.

First up is the near legendary band Bones Brigade. This is the name that the skateboard manufacturer took its name from (or so I've been told). Pro-skater Steve Caballero apparently used to play in this band. Either way, we are talking full-on skatethrash here, with lyrics about skateboarding (duh!) and shitloads of flashy guitarsolos (fuck yeah!!!). An amazing album!
Next is the number one "I dont give a fuck"thrashband from the US, Brody's Militia, with the album The Appalachian Twelve Gauge Massacre. Pissed off, pissed on, aggressive thrash, with a distinct smell of bourbon on its breath. Not for the overly P.C. or the faint of heart. Really good!

Next is the band with grindcores uncrowned master of vocals; Joe Horvath. Circle Of Dead Children is propably my alltime favorite grindcore band, and this is, in my opinion, their best album to date, Human harvest. Just lean back and listen to the sounds that Joe Horvath is able to produce with his throat! Fuck!! And there is no vocal processing done on this record, mind you. He must have made some sort of pact with Satan to be able to sing like that. Someone pass me Satans direct phonenumber A.S.A.P.!!!!

Lastly is two splits with the amazing start-stop'ish powerviolence band xbrainiax. This shit is off the map! Fairly young guys blasting away like there was no tomorrow. Take a deep breath before playing this stuff, cause you wont have time to breathe once the blasting mayhem starts. This is their 7'' splits with No Comply and Dead Radical. If you dont enjoy this, please swallow your own tounge.

The first thing i's like to share is the DMZ comic by Brian Wood. Imagine if manhatten had become a war zone, the no-mans land which nobody is able to claim. the inhabitants have to try and live on in any way possible.

American black metal part III: Lurkers in the woods

We return, once again, to the postmodern wasteland that is the United States to glance upon one of the darkest of the black pearls, to ever be unearthed from the deep forrests of Olympia.

This is, unquestionably, my all time favorite blackmetal band, and one of my all time favorite bands as a whole; Wolves In The Throne Room. What I offer onto you here is nothing less than five releases of almost unparalleled intensity, ferocity and beauty, ranging form blasting, driven blackmetal in the vein of early Burzum, to ambient parts bringing an otherworldly quality into the mix. The releases will follow in chronological order.

We begin with "Diadem of 12 stars". The first song I ever heard by this band was "Face in a nighttime mirror part II", and it instantly had me hooked. Love at first listen if you will, nothing less. A brilliant record, teeming with the immense forces of nature and the mysticism of the wild. This is the record that truely opened my eyes to the american blackmetal scene.

Their next record was "Two hunters". Picking up where "Diadem of 12 stars" left off, its opens with an instrumental track that sets the mood just right. The first time I heard the third track "Cleansing", with the clean bit, sung by a woman in the intro, and the way they shift from this bit into the acctual song, my jaw instantly dropped to the floor. Please note that the version uploaded here is the vinyl version of "Two hunters", as it contains not four, but five tracks, the extra track called "To reveal". This record is split into two seperate links due to its lenght.

The "Live at Roadburn 2008" record captures the Wolves at their performance at the 2008 Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, Holland. It contains three songs, namely "Vastness & sorrow" and I will lay my body down among the rocks and roots" from "Two hunters", as well as "Face in a nighttime mirror part I" from "Diadem of 12 stars".

The "Malevolent grain" EP, finds the Wolves doing a 12'' with one song on each side. Here they have bridged the experiments from the first two full lenghts with a woman singing in a clean voice, with the sheer frenzy of the songs that blaze forward like a forrestfire. It contains one song with Jamie Myers on vocals, and no screaming what so ever. The other song is the Wolves as we know them, as the aforementioned cleansing forrestfire.
Lastly is their brand spankin new release "Black cascade". There isnt much to say about this record, apart from the fact that the band continues to improve and develop their specific style on what is, in my humble opinion, yet another masterpiece. As with "Two hunters" I have had to split it into two parts.
Let me leave you with one closing remark: this is one of only a handfull of bands, that I have never heard anything less than amazing from. As such they are worthy of being one of the few bands that I simply cannot see ever doing anything that isnt good.

But turn off the lights in your dingy appartment, light twenty black candles, and listen to these songs with your headphones turned almost all the way up, and dream yourself away to the deep forrests of a world from before our so-called civilization destroyed the purity of nature.

No Hope For the Kids didn't actually play hardcore, but fantastic mid-tempo melodic punk. The osund always reminds me of that of punkbands from eastern europe. The band started out around Ungdomshuset in the beginning of the 2000-s, featuring former or later members of Asbest, Hul, Gorilla Angreb, Amdi Petersens Armé and The Snipers. You should be able to find a more in-depth bio somewhere, but just listen to it. It's catchy as fuck, one of my all-time favorite danish bands.

This file compiles their 7"s and their self-titled full-length.

I guess the title says it all. Coming up is no less than five compilations, all from 625 Records, and you know what that means; THRASH, POWERVIOLENCE, GRINDCORE and skateboards! As this pretty much says it all, I'll only write a few words of comment to each record.

3... 2... 1... GO!!

Firstly we have Phoenix Thrash Detonation. A no-brainer. All bands from the Phoenix area, including Get Destroyed!, George Moshington, Landmine Marathon, Snaggletooth, and Think Fast.

Secondly, the legendary Bandana Thrash Vol. 1, flexi 7'', with three amazing japanese thrashbands; Flash Gordon, Lie, Crucial Section, and Max 625's own band What Happens Next?.Thirdly, another one of the regional compilations, namely California Thrash Demolition. This is the compilation that compiles SoCal Comp EP, The Bay Area Thrash Vol. I Comp, The Bay Area Thrash Vol.II Comp, plus extra SoCal and NorCal bands and a few livetracks in the mix. Highlights include: Apathetic Youth, Harry Balzagna And The Teenie Weenies, Bloody Phoenix, Broken Needle, Scholastic Deth, Look Back And Laugh, Deadfall, Uzi Suicide, Hostile Takeover, and Second Opinion.

Next up is the European version; Euro Thrash Retribution, compiling bands from Germany, Serbia, Czech Republic, Sweden, Macedonia and Holland to name a few. Some of the highlights: Bizarre X, Choice Of My Own, Earth Today, Infanticide, Lahar, and Tekken.

Lastly is the all-japanese compilation Mosh Circle, Jerk Punks, featuring four thrashbands from the country of the rising sun. BBQ Chickens, Razors Edge, Idol Punch and Tomorrow.
So all in all, here is a shitload of new bands for you to get aquainted with. GO!!!

American black metal part II: The offshots/An unholy trinity

So, this is the second installment detailing good blackmetal bands from the US of A. Without to much rambling, I'd like to sneak in one detail. Todays topics are; Book of black earth, Teen Cthulhu and Skarp. The reason these three bands have been chosen, apart from their ties to american blackmetal, is the fact that they all share members. TJ Cowgill (vox and guitar) and Hank Guthrie (keyboards) from Book of black earth played in Teen Cthulhu. Joe Axler (amazing drummer) also from Book of black earth, also plays in Skarp.

So without delaying the inevitable any further, I give you Book of black earth - The feast. This is their first full length record and by far their best material in my book. We are talking BRUTAL blackmetal with an (un)healthy dose of deathmetal in the mix. With songs like "May your god deny you" and "Serve the adversary" these are punx who have taken on blackmetal with every bit of punk aestethics they know. Skullcrushing, lightning fast blackmetal to be played at religious mass-suicides.

Next up is Skarp - Requiem. With a guy like Joe Axler behind the drums, you know that youre in for a treat. This time round though, we are talking less straight up blackmetal and more crust with definite grind influenced drumming and very blackmetal induced guitarwork. An amazing record that shifts from crusty d-beat inferno to raging grindy blackmetal in a matter of seconds. Also, great female vocals. Over all a really recommendable record.

Last, but propably best in my book, is the allmighty Teen Cthulhu and the record Ride the Blade. Though straying far from the original blackmetal recipie it is, in my humble opinion, nothing short of a masterpiece. Hysterical vocals over frantic, blazing music with plenty of keyboards. I know that the phrase "plenty of keyboards" is enough to scare most people (including myself) away, but trust me, in this band, it works. Once I stopped dismissing the keyboards as just some kind of circus act, it dawned upon me, in all its immensity how good this record really were. I dont know it the great Cthulhu himself would approve of this (more or less) blasphemous use of his name though...

American black metal part I: The beginning.

So this is the first in a series of posts in where I will celebrate american blackmetal bands of my liking. I know that it is not true-necro-cult to praise black metalbands that dont have their origins in Scandinavia, but I have taken a liking to the (sometimes) unique sound that springs from the roots of the american blackmetal scene.

First up is two classics that are sadly not very well known despite how absolutely, goat-worshippingly, ungodly amazing they are. San Fancisco's Weakling pioneered the sound that would later shape bands like Wolves in the throne room. That fact in it self should be enough to get most peoples interrest. Featuring John Gossard from Asunder (look elsewhere in this blog) on guitar and vocals, Weakling has a slightly more dirty sound than Wolves in the throne room and the vocals are more hysterical. There is, however no doubt where the Wolves have gotten their quecards from when they founded the band.

They only did one real full lenght record called Dead as dreams, featuring five amazing songs. That is enough talk, no go listen to it, AND BE AMAZED!!!!!.........please...

Next up is a totally overlooked band called Twilight. Here we are dealing with a band that spawned numerous notable solo blackmetal acts upon disbanding. In short:

Wrest is known for his solo works as: Leviathan & Lurker of Chalice
Malefic is known for his solo works as: Xasthur
Hildolf is known for his solo works as: Draguar
Imperial is known for his solo works as: Krieg
Azentrius is known for his solo works as: Nachtmystium

What is interresting, is that all of these acts, especially Lurker of Chalice and Xasthur took a bit of Twilight with them into their soloprojects. A post will follow soon with some of the post-Twilight acts.

Musically we are dealing with heavily distorted blackmetal, mixing equal parts of the Scandinavian sound with their own approach to the genre. The words to best describe this record is encapsuled in the title of the closing track: "Beautiful and malignant". Fucking incredible!

Crushing, slow demise...

Its time again peoples. This time 'round, I'll dish out some abyssdeep, crushingly heavy music, as a five course menu:

The starter is, by popular demand; Noothgrush - Erode the person. This record compiles tracks from their splits with Wellington and Corrupted among others. We are talking classic dirty-as-fuck sludge, that shares a drummer with the amazing american sludgeoutfit Graves At Sea.

The second dish is the aforementioned Graves At Sea - Documents of grief. Again, we are dealing with distorted sludge, with slight hints of Black Sabbath here and there. With four songs, all around 7 minutes, this is the kind of record you wanna put on, just after downing a glass of absinth (you know, the old school kind that induces hallucinations, Van Gogh-earcutting-style).

The first main dish is a true mastodon of doom/funeral doom from one of the best bands in the genre; the allmighty Asunder. Featuring members from such notable acts as Dystopia, Wolves in the throne room, Weakling, and Ghoul there is no overlooking the immensity of this record. With only two tracks, ticking in at 22 and 50 minutes respectively, the air practically vibrates between every beat of the snare. You can almost feel the walls of this reality shivering as everything you know threatens to cave in on you, only to reveal a dreamscape of sinister vistas... Okay I think I might have gotten a bit carried away there, but seriously, Works will come undone is that good.

The second main dish is an equally black monolith of a record. The UK based band Moss spills forth from the void to offer us their first full-lenght record; Cthonic rites. As the atentive reader will no doubt have noticed, we are dealing with full-on HP Lovecraft worship here. The music itself is blacker than the void that spawned it. Drone/funeral doom that moves forward in a tempo that is painfull to say the least. Listening to the two songs on here is like watching Shub-Niggurath - The Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young, as he struggles to take form. Absolutely NOT a record you want to listen to, if you are on any kind of strong psychedelic drugs, unless you want to end up in a permanent bad trip of mindbulging proportions. Fun fact: the two songs here tick in at 66.6 minutes all together. Yeah!

For dessert, still in the vein of HP Lovecraft, I give you Portland, USA's Aldebaran - Dwellers in twilight. The lyrics and song titles itself make this record worth your while if you are even remotely into the writings of this great writer. Musically we are talking more traditional doom than for example Moss, but still, there is no denying the gravity of a release like this one.

Now get stoned, crank up your crappy stereo, and float away on the black rivers of R'lyeh.

Faster, FASTER!!!

So, upon the succes with my first post, I figured to post another one, this time a three-piece.

First up is a record that a friend passed me for free from his record store. Upon asking him what it was, since I never heard of the band before, he informed me that it was "good fast hardcore". As he knows my love for fastcore, powerviolence and grind I figured that he knew what I would expect when he told me it was fast. I was in NO way dissapointed, and can highly recommend Strong Intention - Extermination Vision. I still dont know much about this band, but I read it described somewhere as "a NYHC-toughguy band that just started playing faster and faster over time". This record is fuckin PISSED and is sure to grind your testicles to dust!

Next up is one of the ultimate fastcore/powerviolence classics: Siege - Drop dead. This is the record that the band Drop Dead took their name after. That should go a bit of way in describing the impact that this record had on the genre as a whole. Eight tracks of blistering fast hardcore, and one crushingly slow one, taking one whole side of the LP version! The most interresting thing about this record though, is that it was recorded in 1984... Think about that when you listen to it!

Last but in no way least is a not very well known, and kindda shot-lived danish grindcore band called Sygdom (Disease in danish). Featuring members from other Copenhagen bands such as Lack, Ripping Headache, All I See and Children of fall, Sygdom gave these guys an outlet for their pure metallic evil tendencies. The lyrics are all in danish and were written and sung by one of the greatest writers the Copenhagen diy hardcore scene has ever seen, namely Thomas from Lack. They never released anything official, but a handfull of us were lucky enough to get our sticky little fingers on a CDR that the drummer Jonas (from Ripping Headache) did at one point. The record contains 11 (12) songs that they recorded in their rehearsalspace.

Sadly this brilliant band is no longer among us, and since there is so few copies of this record out there I figured that I'd better share it with you all, for your listening torment.

So, this is my first post on this blog. Thanx to sucram for inviting me.

I thought a lot about what to post first, and ended ud deciding on starting out with a killer. This is the Scholastic Deth discography, called Final Examiner. This band includes the one and only Max Ward of What Happens Next? and Spazz among others on drums. We are talking straight up thrash/fastcore with amazing lyrics about everything from skating to drinking coffee (score...) and enjoying reading books.

The second treat I have for you today, is a comp released on Max Ward's label the glorious 625 Records. This is just one of the several comps he has done over the last couple of years, all focusing on different regional and national scenes. This here is the Bay Area Thrash Vol. III including these amazing bands: In Disgust, Beforeafter, Rosenbombs, Suburban Death Camp, Second Opinion, Brutal Death, and No Dice. All friggin' fuckin' faster than death music. And there is a few covers in there as well, including Infest, D.R.I., and Void.

In other words, fast fuckin' music for fast fuckin' people!

K-Town Hardcore # 3 - Amdi Petersens Armé Discography

Next up is one of the most popular and known hardcore bands from Copenhagen. This is obvious since they play great Hardcore.

Amdi Petersens Armé formed in 1999.
With Peter on vocals & guitar, Tommas on bass and Skralle on drums +
various live guitarists including
Morten (Young Wasteners, Hul)
Lasse (Hjertestop, Los Retardos)
Ronni (No Hope for the Kids, Snipers)

Named after an elusive Danish cult leader this raw hardcore punk band took DIY hardcore circles by storm with their first 7" on Kick n' Punch Records. APA play trashy aggressive hardcore in the early 80's US style.
The first 7" sounded very much like early Dischord singles such as Youth Brigade, SOA and Teen Idles. The second 7" continues in the same vein but has a bit more of a Nervous Breakdown/Jealous Again era Black Flag feel or perhaps like missing sessions from Boston Not LA. Amdi Petersens Armé broke up in 2002. Members later went on to play in bands such as Gorilla Angreb, No Hope For The Kids, Hjertestop & Young Wasteners. (bio taken from their unofficial crackspace)

This is Their first Self titled EP (the best release), their Second Ep "Blod ser mere virkeligt ud på film" and their track from the "København i Ruiner" compilation. Missing is their self-released demotape (which had three songs on it also on the ST 7"), a track on a compilation LP Lengua Armada (but it's on the first EP) and a track from a tape compilation which i cant find anywhere. Most of the tracks are m4a, shit luck. you can convert them in iTunes.

K-Town Hardcore # 2 - Asbest Discography

Shit, Limp Wrist is coming to copenhagen the 2th of July, and Shitcomet is going to play with them!! that's the sickest thing that could happen, considering it's going to be our first real concert.

Our new writer Marco has now joined us, so welcome to him.

I realize that a lot of Requiems links are broken, but we will try to fix them as soon as he comes home from London.

This is the next part of my K-town hardcore/punk posting spree is ASBEST's discography compiled by myself. These cats knew how to play their hardcore-punk and totally held up to the many other fine bands such as Amdi Petersens Armé, Young Wasteners, Incontrollados etc coming out of the K-Town scene in the late 1990´s. Classic K-Town hardcore for the punks! Especially the tracks from the "Nyt Blod" Ep and the "København i Ruiner" compilation are great. Their take on hardcore is reminiscent of 80's hardcore in the US but with their own sound.

Okay it has been some weeks since my last post. To new writers will be joining us soon (or one of them has already), and i plan to post a lot more!

This post is to start off my plan to post a lot of the old k-town hardcore stuff.

I don't know much about Aktiv Dödshjælp (Active euthanasia). They have three tracks on the legendary compilation "København I Ruiner"from 2003 released on dead label Kick 'n Punch(which i will upload for you when i get it ripped). They play fast, thrashy hardcore with screaming vocals, blastbeats and some melody to the bass- and guitarlines. At least one member went on to play/sing in Asebia and Mareridt. I have no cover for this record, so click on the picure of K-town Mosh Crew below!

50/50 was formed in 2005 in Houston, Texas. I think. Anyway they play crazy grind (a bit gore-y, a bit powerviolence) they call skate gore. Members also play in Insect Warfare, Knuckle Scraper and Pretty Little Flower, so you should know that this is sick! EyeHateGod - Dopesick

Tonight i went to see Shades Of Grey, Wreck//age and Double Space (the last and first bands completely nailed the place down), so now i feel like sharing some heavy, slow, misantropic sludge/stoner with you - Eyehategod from the US. Dopesick is by my opinion their best release. This is a depressive, desperate wall of sound. It was released in 1996. The intro is the singer slicing open his hand with an open bottle after not being satisfied with his attempt to record the sound of the same bottle breaking.

Bombanfall

Here´s a little 7" germ from the relative unknown band Bombanfall also known as Two Moon Rising.
Bombanfall came from Sweden and only released this 7" in 87 i think.
I dont know much about the background information of the band expect i read somewhere that it was started by two punks and two guys that were playing black metal.
Apparently they meet at a drug rehab center. How nice.
This 7" is called "Åsiktsfrihet" and sounds like Discharge with a influence of bands like Svart Framtid and Kafka Prosess from Norway.
Bombanfall also reminds me of later danish bands like Asebia and Uro.
This is great stuff so now hear it.

The Spectacle - Crimethinc assualt from Norway

Hey.
This is my first contribution to Perpetualvomit!
And because of that i thought i would share the discography of one of my favorite bands.

The anarchist collective Crimethinc has through the years released a series of amazing outstanding records, including such bands as Zegota, Face down in shit and Catharsis.
The band of the Crimethinc releases that caught most of my attention was the Norwegian band The Spectacle.

What i first got hold of was their second release "I, Fail" it was (no shit) like nothing ive ever heard.
Mixing heavy deep and aggressive crust with long beautiful instrumental sequences this record reinvented my view on hardcore.
The influence of His Hero Is Gone, Zegota and Godspeed! You Black Emporer can be found in their songs yet The Spectacle keep their style original and inventive.

The first release of The Spectacle is "Rope or Guillotine" which has a more faster and heavy sound then their second release this also counts for their 10".
Eitherway, every Spectale release have a special place in my book, through "I, Fail" have the most special place.
I strongly recommend The Spectacle for everyone who like hardcore/crust bands that dares to go outside the box of punk.

RUIDOSA INMUNDICIA discography

Okay i'm bored a lot and i guess ill be posting pretty often. Welcome to Requiem who will be joining me as a co-writer!

now, to what has to be one of my favorite bands: RUIDOSA INMUNDICIA.
I don't know when they began playing, but they live in Austria and some of them are from Chile.

I first heard them at k-town festival here in Copenhagen in '05 (i think), where i was amazed by their very aggresive, fast and yet melodic hardcore/punk with occasional slowdowns. Hyper political and angry female vocal backed up by a darker male one, fast guitarwork, crazy basslines and a drummer off his head. Here is their discography, Click the pictures for download!

Their demo tape from '04 is my favorite release by them (even though i think the two following are fantastic). It is the one on which they play most fast and Carolina's vocals are most aggressive. the recording is raw and i like that.
the DE UNA VEZ 7", from 2005 (Thought crime records), has more melody and better recording. It is some of the same songs as the tape, but you can hear some difference.

in 2007 they made a 12" split with Solid Decline (again on thought crime records). I only include the RxIx side, because when i put the record on, I tend to listen to it again... and again... and never the other side.

I just rehearsed with Shitcomet and this gave me a crazy urge to give you another classic:

Infest has to be one of the most influential hardcore/thrash bands, and according to me this is their best release. Fantastic powerviolence-styled fast hardcore molesting and one nerve
wrecking slow sludge track. It was recorded in 1995 (music) and 2000 (vocals) and released on Deep Six Records and Draw Blank Records in 2002. Terminal Nation is a fantastic song.

Welcome to the blog. I will post mainly punk/hardcore/powerviolence/crust/ you name it music, but also reviews, concerts, comics, politics etc. Hopefully two co-writers will join me soon for your listening torment.

we'll start with two powerviolence comps.

Possesed to skate features 41 songs of brutal powerviolence from the following mastodon thrashers: CHARLES BRONSON, SPAZZ, ASSHOLE PARADE, PALATKA, DESPISE YOU, PRETENTIOUS ASSHOLES and UNANSWARED. A must have as you can see if you have any idea about what powerviolence is (or want to get into it). Released on Pessimiser Records, later on CD as a split release with 625 records.

The other is one from 625 records, which again means it is good. The Endless Blockade, Warzone Womyn, Hatred Surge, Brainiax, Tumorfeast, Iron lung, Knuckle Scraper, In disgust, Severe, Insect warfare and other great stuff. Most recordings are filled with energy........ GET IT!!!! NOW!!!!
